Narrative:
Flying arthur kill one departure we failed to notice the instructions to intercept the sbj 100 degree radial. Departure control issued us instructions to get us back on track. I have been based in ewr for over 5 yrs in the past and have flown the old newark two departure hundreds of times. This new departure (which I was flying for the first time) appeared to be, and I assumed it would be handled the same. The first officer and I both missed the intercept note. I believe that this is probably a recurring problem. The part 121 carrier ahead of us also missed the intercept note.
