Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi to runway 15 via taxiway J. As we taxied the aircraft, we were in the process of completing our taxi checklist. I looked down to view my taxiway chart, and when I looked up, I realized that the aircraft had passed a 'hold short' line for runway 15 on taxiway J. When looking at the chart, I had inadvertently neglected to make a 1/2 left turn onto taxiway north. I immediately stopped the aircraft, and was able to hold short of the runway proper. There was no conflict with landing or departing traffic. The ground controller was watching us at the time, and noticed us miss the turn. He cleared us to cross the runway at taxiway J almost immediately after I stopped the aircraft short of the runway. A call to the tower later in the day revealed that the incident was not considered an incursion because we were cleared to cross the active runway at that point. Distraction always happens at the worst time.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A FLC TAXIING A SF340 FAILS TO MAKE A TURN IN THE TAXI RTE AT DCA, DC, AND ALMOST HAS A RWY INCURSION.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 15 VIA TXWY J. AS WE TAXIED THE ACFT, WE WERE IN THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING OUR TAXI CHKLIST. I LOOKED DOWN TO VIEW MY TXWY CHART, AND WHEN I LOOKED UP, I REALIZED THAT THE ACFT HAD PASSED A 'HOLD SHORT' LINE FOR RWY 15 ON TXWY J. WHEN LOOKING AT THE CHART, I HAD INADVERTENTLY NEGLECTED TO MAKE A 1/2 L TURN ONTO TXWY N. I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE ACFT, AND WAS ABLE TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY PROPER. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT WITH LNDG OR DEPARTING TFC. THE GND CTLR WAS WATCHING US AT THE TIME, AND NOTICED US MISS THE TURN. HE CLRED US TO CROSS THE RWY AT TXWY J ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER I STOPPED THE ACFT SHORT OF THE RWY. A CALL TO THE TWR LATER IN THE DAY REVEALED THAT THE INCIDENT WAS NOT CONSIDERED AN INCURSION BECAUSE WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS THE ACTIVE RWY AT THAT POINT. DISTR ALWAYS HAPPENS AT THE WORST TIME.
