Narrative:
Turbochargers failed on climb to altitude. Total engine failure. Tried alternate fuel and air and standby pumps. Still failed. Went to best glide, maximum pitch propeller and took vectors to tnp. Approximately 3 mins after failure, throttled engine back and leaned mixture. Power regained but normally aspirated (20 inches at 2400 RPM at 12000 ft). Then able to return to departure airport udd.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PIPER 46-310 IN CLB DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO ENG PWR LOSS CAUSED BY THE EXHAUST TURBOCHARGER FAILURE.
Narrative: TURBOCHARGERS FAILED ON CLB TO ALT. TOTAL ENG FAILURE. TRIED ALTERNATE FUEL AND AIR AND STANDBY PUMPS. STILL FAILED. WENT TO BEST GLIDE, MAX PITCH PROP AND TOOK VECTORS TO TNP. APPROX 3 MINS AFTER FAILURE, THROTTLED ENG BACK AND LEANED MIXTURE. PWR REGAINED BUT NORMALLY ASPIRATED (20 INCHES AT 2400 RPM AT 12000 FT). THEN ABLE TO RETURN TO DEP ARPT UDD.
