Narrative:
Our aircraft was on a heading direct to iiu. We requested direct bvt and were told turn left to boiler and higher in 3 mins. We asked the controller to repeat the instruction prior to the higher in 3 mins and he replied 'turn left to boiler.' we initiated the turn, at which time the controller asked us to verify our heading, and stated the clearance was to expect a turn towards boiler. He then cleared us direct bvt.
