Flight crew of an MD88 shut down the #1 engine and declared an emergency due to an engine fire warning. The flight crew suspected that it was a false warning since the 'B' fire detection loop had been deferred prior to flight.

Narrative:
Deferred #1 engine fire detection 'B' loop, got #1 engine fire warning (bells, aurals, lights, etc) and complied with engine shutdown procedures. In my heart I knew it was a faulty indication but procedures dictated a shutdown and declaring an emergency. Landed at nearest suitable airport which was atl after declaring an emergency. Uneventful landing.
