Narrative:

Aircraft xyz had a deferred seat back that was assigned to me. A svcable seat back was already in our stores awaiting pick-up. While at the stores location, I noticed it was a seat back that contained an oxygen generator assembly. I opened the cover to see if it had been shipped with the generator assembly and made note of its presence and noticed that the door assembly was going to require an adjustment. The seat back installation was uneventful. An re mechanic assisted me in making the proper wire connections. After the seat back was secured the oxygen door was again opened to adjust its latching mechanism. The latch only required a minor adjustment so the oxygen assembly did not require removal. The defective seat back assembly with its oxygen assembly was returned to stores and at that time I inquired as to why the seat backs were shipped with oxygen generators installed. Nobody seemed to know and the matter was dropped. The paperwork was completed and the aircraft returned to service. When the unsvcable seat back was returned to the seat shop they noticed that it contained an oxygen canister assembly and notified the proper people that there may be an aircraft in service without an oxygen canister. On oct/xc/97 a mechanic was tasked with inspection for a missing oxygen assembly. The write-up was assigned in lax and signed off as adjusted door assembly. On oct/xd/97 the aircraft was at ord and again assigned to inspect for a missing oxygen assembly. This time, a mechanic discovered a missing oxygen assembly and one was installed and the aircraft was returned to service.
