Narrative:
After rotation, #3 engine began compressor stalling continuously. Landing gear was raised and #3 throttle retarded to idle. During climb another aircraft reported tire pieces on runway. Based on this we shut down #3 after the aircraft was cleaned up. Climbed to 4000 ft and dumped fuel to aircraft gross weight of 155000 pounds. We lowered the landing gear and flew by the tower for a visual inspection. The right gear was said to be abnormal so we dumped to minimum fuel and instructed the flight attendants to brace for landing. Landing was made normally. The outboard right gear tire had been ingested in #3 engine causing its failure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B727 THROTTLED BACK AND SUBSEQUENTLY SHUT DOWN THE #3 ENG DURING TKOF AND INITIAL CLB DUE TO TIRE PIECES FROM THEIR R OUTBOARD TIRE BEING INGESTED INTO THE #3 ENG. AN EMER WAS THEN DECLARED, FUEL DUMPED, A FLY BY THE TWR FOR GEAR CONDITION CHK WAS MADE, MORE FUEL WAS DUMPED AND FINALLY A SUCCESSFUL RETURN LAND MADE. THERE WAS NO FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE ACFT.
Narrative: AFTER ROTATION, #3 ENG BEGAN COMPRESSOR STALLING CONTINUOUSLY. LNDG GEAR WAS RAISED AND #3 THROTTLE RETARDED TO IDLE. DURING CLB ANOTHER ACFT RPTED TIRE PIECES ON RWY. BASED ON THIS WE SHUT DOWN #3 AFTER THE ACFT WAS CLEANED UP. CLBED TO 4000 FT AND DUMPED FUEL TO ACFT GROSS WT OF 155000 LBS. WE LOWERED THE LNDG GEAR AND FLEW BY THE TWR FOR A VISUAL INSPECTION. THE R GEAR WAS SAID TO BE ABNORMAL SO WE DUMPED TO MINIMUM FUEL AND INSTRUCTED THE FLT ATTENDANTS TO BRACE FOR LNDG. LNDG WAS MADE NORMALLY. THE OUTBOARD R GEAR TIRE HAD BEEN INGESTED IN #3 ENG CAUSING ITS FAILURE.
