Narrative:

Aircraft was descending to land at tampa international airport. I was PF when altitude alerter sounded at 5700 ft MSL. I thought clearance altitude was 4000 ft while altitude alerter was still set to 6000 ft. PNF still convinced 6000 ft was last clearance. We climbed back to 6000 ft and subsequently received clearance to 3000 ft. No conflict noted and no controller call as to deviation. Aircraft descended to 5600 ft MSL before returning to 6000 ft.
