Narrative:
The captain and I both arrived in the cockpit at the same time for a first flight of the day segment. With him in the cockpit I worked through my initial preflight checklists. He performed his duties and then went to get the flight paperwork. Upon returning to the cockpit we accomplished our before start checklist. The second to the last item 'papers, maintenance log' was responded to (by captain). We have 'flight plan, release, fuel slip maintenance log, WX, crew bags/aboard.' after departure the station operations personnel told us that the maintenance logbook was still on the ground and we would get it on our way back through sfo. We did an unexpected aircraft swap and the aircraft was rerouted. Maintenance put a temporary logbook in aircraft at our arrival station. 1) logbook should be kept on aircraft or returned to aircraft by maintenance as soon as possible. 2) this was minimum rest overnight.
