Narrative:
Brasilia center, FL330. Brs/169 degree radial/90 NM. At AB26Z we heard brasilia center, 124.4, to say, turn left conflicting traffic FL330. We did so by turning 30 degrees left and asked if that heading was sufficient to avoid the traffic 4 times. Center never answered. At 20 NM the traffic showed up on our TCASII screen and we turned further left to heading of 120 degrees. At this time center told us to turn right at the same time we picked up the traffic visually. This was followed by a TA and RA telling us to descend. We descended approximately 500 ft until we received a 'clear of conflict.' we then proceeded back on course and altitude. Brasilia center asked why we turned left. Center stated that they said, 'do not turn left, conflicting traffic FL330.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B767 FLC TRIES TO AVOID TFC THAT THE ARTCC RADAR CTLR AT BRASILIA CTR HAD MENTIONED. PIC AND FO THOUGHT THE CTLR SAID, '...TURN L....' TCASII INTERVENES AND AFTER IT IS ALL OVER THE CTLR HAD ONLY ADVISED THEM, '...DO NOT TURN L....'
Narrative: BRASILIA CTR, FL330. BRS/169 DEG RADIAL/90 NM. AT AB26Z WE HEARD BRASILIA CTR, 124.4, TO SAY, TURN L CONFLICTING TFC FL330. WE DID SO BY TURNING 30 DEGS L AND ASKED IF THAT HEADING WAS SUFFICIENT TO AVOID THE TFC 4 TIMES. CTR NEVER ANSWERED. AT 20 NM THE TFC SHOWED UP ON OUR TCASII SCREEN AND WE TURNED FURTHER L TO HDG OF 120 DEGS. AT THIS TIME CTR TOLD US TO TURN R AT THE SAME TIME WE PICKED UP THE TFC VISUALLY. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A TA AND RA TELLING US TO DSND. WE DSNDED APPROX 500 FT UNTIL WE RECEIVED A 'CLR OF CONFLICT.' WE THEN PROCEEDED BACK ON COURSE AND ALT. BRASILIA CTR ASKED WHY WE TURNED L. CTR STATED THAT THEY SAID, 'DO NOT TURN L, CONFLICTING TFC FL330.'
