Narrative:

New york departure. Bwz 080 degree radial/20 NM. We were cleared to 15000 ft and advised of MU2 traffic at 11 O'clock position at 11500 ft. We were climbing and accelerating through 10800 ft at the time. Very soon thereafter we got the TA on TCASII followed in rapid succession by the advisory to descend. I started forward on the control pressure and began a visual scan aided by the TCASII scope and the first officer. I got a visual on the MU2 at about 2 degrees left in my front windscreen and 2 mi. We passed about 200 ft (or less) to the right and about 200 ft below.

Title: A CLBING MD80 HAS AN NMAC WITH AN MU2 WHO WAS CRUISING AHEAD OF THE ACR AT 11500 FT. DEP CTLR HAD ISSUED AN ADVISORY TO THE MD80 AT 10800 FT IN THE CLB. THE ESTIMATED DISTANCE AT THAT POINT WAS 3-5 MI.

VERY SOON THEREAFTER WE GOT THE TA ON TCASII FOLLOWED IN RAPID SUCCESSION BY THE ADVISORY TO DSND. I STARTED FORWARD ON THE CTL PRESSURE AND BEGAN A VISUAL SCAN AIDED BY THE TCASII SCOPE AND THE FO. I GOT A VISUAL ON THE MU2 AT ABOUT 2 DEGS L IN MY FRONT WINDSCREEN AND 2 MI. WE PASSED ABOUT 200 FT (OR LESS) TO THE R AND ABOUT 200 FT BELOW.
