Narrative:

As I was climbing out of catalina island, about 4-5 mi east of the airport, I was passing through 4000 ft. Suddenly, I saw this B737 on my left, extremely close to me. I banked right and dove and he banked right and climbed. We both took evasive action and missed each other. However, it was very close. I don't know what he was doing at that low altitude so close to the island. I was talking to approach control at that time, but I was not yet assigned a squawk code. A few seconds after the incident I was given a squawk code. At any rate, the controller never called out the traffic for me and never mentioned anything about it, even after it happened. I didn't say anything either and it just blew over.
