Narrative:
Surface winds were reported as 190 degrees at 28 KTS gusting to 36 KTS. I briefed for a visual approach to runway 18R with additional notes about wind condition. Our vref was corrected for the gusting conditions. No windshear reports were passed on to us (if there were any). On short final, the left wing dropped +/-25 degrees followed by a sharp roll to the right of over 35 degrees with a loss of airspeed of 10-15 KTS. I rolled wings level as fast as I could and initiated go around procedures. Our landing weight was heavy (1000 pounds below maximum). When I looked back outside after 2 seconds looking at torque gauges to set go around power, aircraft had moved to the west of runway 18R. Shortly thereafter, tower called and interrupted our procedures (very unsafe for tower to call us then) with 'can we assist you?' wrong question at wrong time!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ATR72 ACFT ON APCH ENCOUNTERED GUSTY WINDS CAUSING MOMENTARY CTL PROBS. RPTR CAPT REGAINED CTL AND EXECUTED A GAR.
Narrative: SURFACE WINDS WERE RPTED AS 190 DEGS AT 28 KTS GUSTING TO 36 KTS. I BRIEFED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 18R WITH ADDITIONAL NOTES ABOUT WIND CONDITION. OUR VREF WAS CORRECTED FOR THE GUSTING CONDITIONS. NO WINDSHEAR RPTS WERE PASSED ON TO US (IF THERE WERE ANY). ON SHORT FINAL, THE L WING DROPPED +/-25 DEGS FOLLOWED BY A SHARP ROLL TO THE R OF OVER 35 DEGS WITH A LOSS OF AIRSPD OF 10-15 KTS. I ROLLED WINGS LEVEL AS FAST AS I COULD AND INITIATED GAR PROCS. OUR LNDG WT WAS HVY (1000 LBS BELOW MAX). WHEN I LOOKED BACK OUTSIDE AFTER 2 SECONDS LOOKING AT TORQUE GAUGES TO SET GAR PWR, ACFT HAD MOVED TO THE W OF RWY 18R. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, TWR CALLED AND INTERRUPTED OUR PROCS (VERY UNSAFE FOR TWR TO CALL US THEN) WITH 'CAN WE ASSIST YOU?' WRONG QUESTION AT WRONG TIME!
