Narrative:
ZHU cleared us direct to nepta intersection. The first officer turned and we began to proceed to nepta. ZHU called us some time later and told us to turn right to a heading of 170 degrees. He said that we had proceeded beyond nepta and to reintercept the airway and gave us a frequency change to ZJX. I asked ZJX if we had created a problem for anyone and the controller stated that he had seen our deviation and had advised the military of our violating their warning area. After ZHU cleared us direct to nepta we did not engage the auxiliary/navigation mode of the autoplt. This was due to our talking amongst ourselves in the cockpit and not paying attention to the task at hand. We also did 1 step less than what was required by not engaging the auxiliary/navigation mode of the autoplt.

Title: AN ACR B727 FLC NEGLECTED TO PROPERLY ENGAGE THE AUTOFLT SYS AND THEREFORE THE AUTOPLT REMAINED ON A HDG RATHER THAN TRACK TOWARD AN INTXN.
Narrative: ZHU CLRED US DIRECT TO NEPTA INTXN. THE FO TURNED AND WE BEGAN TO PROCEED TO NEPTA. ZHU CALLED US SOME TIME LATER AND TOLD US TO TURN R TO A HDG OF 170 DEGS. HE SAID THAT WE HAD PROCEEDED BEYOND NEPTA AND TO REINTERCEPT THE AIRWAY AND GAVE US A FREQ CHANGE TO ZJX. I ASKED ZJX IF WE HAD CREATED A PROB FOR ANYONE AND THE CTLR STATED THAT HE HAD SEEN OUR DEV AND HAD ADVISED THE MIL OF OUR VIOLATING THEIR WARNING AREA. AFTER ZHU CLRED US DIRECT TO NEPTA WE DID NOT ENGAGE THE AUX/NAV MODE OF THE AUTOPLT. THIS WAS DUE TO OUR TALKING AMONGST OURSELVES IN THE COCKPIT AND NOT PAYING ATTN TO THE TASK AT HAND. WE ALSO DID 1 STEP LESS THAN WHAT WAS REQUIRED BY NOT ENGAGING THE AUX/NAV MODE OF THE AUTOPLT.
