Narrative:
Cleared direct to mxe VOR from a 290 degree heading, then cleared on course (J75 240 degrees outbound). The PF put in wrong frequency instead of heading select. I did not catch the error until about 3 mi south of the VOR. About the same time the controller questioned us. Contributing factors: first officer, PF, did not get a good night's sleep. I was preoccupied with other business. Corrective action: pay more attention, especially when someone is tired. Supplemental information from acn 399843: was cleared from a 290 degree heading to go direct mxe 113.2. For some reason during the navigation change frequency I dialed 114.0, dqo, instead. I had 3-4 hours of sleep. Personal business ran very late and the drive home was tough. Combined with an early report, I got no proper rest. Thought about calling in sick, but didn't because of company pressure about using sick time. They have no personal day off policy. Captain was probably distraction as he had just received a call from chief pilot about a disciplinary action he has planned.

Title: A DH8 FLC EXPERIENCES A HDG TRACK POS DEV DURING A 'DIRECT TO' CLRNC. FO PF HAD DIALED IN THE WRONG VOR FREQ.
Narrative: CLRED DIRECT TO MXE VOR FROM A 290 DEG HDG, THEN CLRED ON COURSE (J75 240 DEGS OUTBOUND). THE PF PUT IN WRONG FREQ INSTEAD OF HDG SELECT. I DID NOT CATCH THE ERROR UNTIL ABOUT 3 MI S OF THE VOR. ABOUT THE SAME TIME THE CTLR QUESTIONED US. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: FO, PF, DID NOT GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP. I WAS PREOCCUPIED WITH OTHER BUSINESS. CORRECTIVE ACTION: PAY MORE ATTN, ESPECIALLY WHEN SOMEONE IS TIRED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 399843: WAS CLRED FROM A 290 DEG HDG TO GO DIRECT MXE 113.2. FOR SOME REASON DURING THE NAV CHANGE FREQ I DIALED 114.0, DQO, INSTEAD. I HAD 3-4 HRS OF SLEEP. PERSONAL BUSINESS RAN VERY LATE AND THE DRIVE HOME WAS TOUGH. COMBINED WITH AN EARLY RPT, I GOT NO PROPER REST. THOUGHT ABOUT CALLING IN SICK, BUT DIDN'T BECAUSE OF COMPANY PRESSURE ABOUT USING SICK TIME. THEY HAVE NO PERSONAL DAY OFF POLICY. CAPT WAS PROBABLY DISTR AS HE HAD JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM CHIEF PLT ABOUT A DISCIPLINARY ACTION HE HAS PLANNED.
