Narrative:
We were told to hold short of the active runway, soon after that the tower gave a taxi into position and hold clearance to my first officer, repeated back the clearance and I started across the hold short line, but still clear of the runway. Then another aircraft called and said we took his clearance so we held short. The other plane had a very similar tail number to ours. The other plane was the one that noticed the error. I don't believe the tower controller noticed the error. Another plane was on approach 1 1/2 mi final and landed without incident. I believe that we were expecting a clearance at that time and when a similar tail number was called, we were expecting it to be ours. In the future we should try to be sure about receiving a clearance and reading back our whole tail number instead of just the last three numbers.

Title: ACFT HOLDING SHORT AWAITING CLRNC INTO POS. FO HEARD A CLRNC FOR POS AND HOLD AND REPLIED CLRED INTO POS. ANOTHER ACFT WITH A SIMILAR CALL SIGN SAID THE CLRNC WAS FOR THEM. TWR CTLR SORTED THINGS OUT AFTER ACFT ON FINAL LANDED.
Narrative: WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF THE ACTIVE RWY, SOON AFTER THAT THE TWR GAVE A TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD CLRNC TO MY FO, REPEATED BACK THE CLRNC AND I STARTED ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE, BUT STILL CLR OF THE RWY. THEN ANOTHER ACFT CALLED AND SAID WE TOOK HIS CLRNC SO WE HELD SHORT. THE OTHER PLANE HAD A VERY SIMILAR TAIL NUMBER TO OURS. THE OTHER PLANE WAS THE ONE THAT NOTICED THE ERROR. I DON'T BELIEVE THE TWR CTLR NOTICED THE ERROR. ANOTHER PLANE WAS ON APCH 1 1/2 MI FINAL AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. I BELIEVE THAT WE WERE EXPECTING A CLRNC AT THAT TIME AND WHEN A SIMILAR TAIL NUMBER WAS CALLED, WE WERE EXPECTING IT TO BE OURS. IN THE FUTURE WE SHOULD TRY TO BE SURE ABOUT RECEIVING A CLRNC AND READING BACK OUR WHOLE TAIL NUMBER INSTEAD OF JUST THE LAST THREE NUMBERS.
