Narrative:
Departing from paris charles de gaulle airport (france) on may/fri/98, we were instructed by ground control to call tower on 119.25 when approaching runway 9. We complied. On or about XX12Z, we heard tower 'air carrier X, taxi into position runway 9 and wait.' I, first officer, replied 'roger, air carrier X taxi into position and hold behind departing aircraft.' after preceding aircraft -- an air carrier Y B737 -- was cleared for takeoff, we started to taxi towards beginning of runway 9. I asked the tower at this time, again: 'confirm air carrier X is cleared into position and hold?' tower response, as we all heard it was 'into position and wait.' at this time, all three of us in the cockpit were in agreement that we were cleared onto the runway. Supplemental information from acn 400860: the tower asked if we had entered the runway and after we said we had he instructed an aircraft on approach to go around. We were then cleared for takeoff.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B767-200 INADVERTENTLY TAXIED INTO POS FOR TKOF AT A FOREIGN ARPT WHEN THE TWR CTLR WANTED THEM TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY. ANOTHER ACFT WAS SENT AROUND AS A RESULT. TOTAL MISUNDERSTANDING BY 3 CREW MEMBERS (INTL RELIEF PLT ABOARD).
Narrative: DEPARTING FROM PARIS CHARLES DE GAULLE ARPT (FRANCE) ON MAY/FRI/98, WE WERE INSTRUCTED BY GND CTL TO CALL TWR ON 119.25 WHEN APCHING RWY 9. WE COMPLIED. ON OR ABOUT XX12Z, WE HEARD TWR 'ACR X, TAXI INTO POS RWY 9 AND WAIT.' I, FO, REPLIED 'ROGER, ACR X TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD BEHIND DEPARTING ACFT.' AFTER PRECEDING ACFT -- AN ACR Y B737 -- WAS CLRED FOR TKOF, WE STARTED TO TAXI TOWARDS BEGINNING OF RWY 9. I ASKED THE TWR AT THIS TIME, AGAIN: 'CONFIRM ACR X IS CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD?' TWR RESPONSE, AS WE ALL HEARD IT WAS 'INTO POS AND WAIT.' AT THIS TIME, ALL THREE OF US IN THE COCKPIT WERE IN AGREEMENT THAT WE WERE CLRED ONTO THE RWY. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 400860: THE TWR ASKED IF WE HAD ENTERED THE RWY AND AFTER WE SAID WE HAD HE INSTRUCTED AN ACFT ON APCH TO GAR. WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR TKOF.
