Narrative:

The student was assigned a short field landing with point of touchdown being the second centerline after the numbers. After touchdown and prior to taking off the runway, the student retracted the gear. The nosewheel subsequently retracted, even though the 2 main gear were down and locked, and the aircraft nosed over into the pavement. It is somewhat of a mystery as to why the student decided to retract the gear lever at this time. The student was in the process of slowing the aircraft down to taxi off the runway. In the process, he prematurely felt he was doing the 'after landing checklist' by reaching for the flaps. He then compounded his error by reaching for the gear lever instead. The instructor could not stop him once the process had begun.

Title: C172RG ACFT ON TRAINING FLT, AFTER LNDG AND TAXIING, STUDENT PLT RETRACTED LNDG GEAR. MAIN GEAR REMAINED EXTENDED BUT NOSE GEAR COLLAPSED.

Narrative: THE STUDENT WAS ASSIGNED A SHORT FIELD LNDG WITH POINT OF TOUCHDOWN BEING THE SECOND CTRLINE AFTER THE NUMBERS. AFTER TOUCHDOWN AND PRIOR TO TAKING OFF THE RWY, THE STUDENT RETRACTED THE GEAR. THE NOSEWHEEL SUBSEQUENTLY RETRACTED, EVEN THOUGH THE 2 MAIN GEAR WERE DOWN AND LOCKED, AND THE ACFT NOSED OVER INTO THE PAVEMENT. IT IS SOMEWHAT OF A MYSTERY AS TO WHY THE STUDENT DECIDED TO RETRACT THE GEAR LEVER AT THIS TIME. THE STUDENT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF SLOWING THE ACFT DOWN TO TAXI OFF THE RWY. IN THE PROCESS, HE PREMATURELY FELT HE WAS DOING THE 'AFTER LNDG CHKLIST' BY REACHING FOR THE FLAPS. HE THEN COMPOUNDED HIS ERROR BY REACHING FOR THE GEAR LEVER INSTEAD. THE INSTRUCTOR COULD NOT STOP HIM ONCE THE PROCESS HAD BEGUN.
