Narrative:
Turned to final approach course (V363), pom 164 degree radial, started descent. Controller alerted that descent not authority/authorized until prado intersection (los angeles area, commercial chart). I thought I was at prado. Controller said I was 5 mi out. Misinterp to mean west of prado, while I was in fact south. Started turn to east, when I realized my true position and turned back toward correct course, also climbing back to 5000 ft. Approach was completed on course at MDA. Problem came about as follows: 1) I had recently flown the route and approach, was familiar and dialed in the intersection from memory. 2) I misplaced the intersection (prado). 3) because there was very minimal radio and air traffic, conditions in cockpit were relaxed and I became engrossed in conversation with my passenger. This distraction caused me to not doublechk my position and chart on turn to course (V363) and become initially confused when called by ATC. Corrective action: observe my own rule for CRM, ie, silence in the cockpit during critical phases and verification of settings/position.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: C182 ACFT TURNED ON TO FINAL APCH COURSE WHEN RPTR STARTED DSCNT TOO SOON. CTLR INTERVENED AND ADVISED RPTR HE WAS STILL 5 MI FROM DSCNT POINT.
Narrative: TURNED TO FINAL APCH COURSE (V363), POM 164 DEG RADIAL, STARTED DSCNT. CTLR ALERTED THAT DSCNT NOT AUTH UNTIL PRADO INTXN (LOS ANGELES AREA, COMMERCIAL CHART). I THOUGHT I WAS AT PRADO. CTLR SAID I WAS 5 MI OUT. MISINTERP TO MEAN W OF PRADO, WHILE I WAS IN FACT S. STARTED TURN TO E, WHEN I REALIZED MY TRUE POS AND TURNED BACK TOWARD CORRECT COURSE, ALSO CLBING BACK TO 5000 FT. APCH WAS COMPLETED ON COURSE AT MDA. PROB CAME ABOUT AS FOLLOWS: 1) I HAD RECENTLY FLOWN THE RTE AND APCH, WAS FAMILIAR AND DIALED IN THE INTXN FROM MEMORY. 2) I MISPLACED THE INTXN (PRADO). 3) BECAUSE THERE WAS VERY MINIMAL RADIO AND AIR TFC, CONDITIONS IN COCKPIT WERE RELAXED AND I BECAME ENGROSSED IN CONVERSATION WITH MY PAX. THIS DISTR CAUSED ME TO NOT DOUBLECHK MY POS AND CHART ON TURN TO COURSE (V363) AND BECOME INITIALLY CONFUSED WHEN CALLED BY ATC. CORRECTIVE ACTION: OBSERVE MY OWN RULE FOR CRM, IE, SILENCE IN THE COCKPIT DURING CRITICAL PHASES AND VERIFICATION OF SETTINGS/POS.
