Narrative:

During climb out from lnk, I noticed that my GPS unit had failed. I had asked ZKC for some heading vectors to confirm that I was still headed in the right direction. Additionally, I asked for a higher altitude for my final altitude. The controller told me that I was indicating 7800 ft, 800 ft above my assigned altitude. I admitted that I was climbing at that time out of 7800 ft. ATC cleared me for 9000 ft. Simply put, I fixated my attention on a 'problem' and forgot to fly the plane.
