Narrative:

The first officer called cvg tower on 118.3 that we were ready for takeoff runway 18L. The tower cleared us for takeoff and the first officer read back the clearance. The first officer was flying and I was watching the engine gauges and making airspeed calls. I looked up just as I had called rotate and the first officer was starting to rotate. I saw a twin cessna sitting on the runway in front of us. I took the controls and pulled the plane off and made a slight right turn clearing the cessna. Once airborne, I called the tower to verify we were cleared for takeoff. His response was, you're airborne aren't you? I replied yes and told him there was a plane sitting on the runway about midfield. He asked if we were all right, I said yes, and we were. He said, sorry about that, then another controller came on and cleared us to departure. Neither the first officer nor myself heard any transmission between the tower and the cessna. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated he had no further contact with cvg tower personnel. A company report was filed. The chief pilot called the air traffic manager about the incident. The tower representative acknowledged responsibility as controller error. The reporter is not aware of any further follow-up action.
