Due to numerous thunderstorms along R763 and area, it was necessary to deviate off route. Due to difficulty of HF communications, was unable to obtain permission in the necessary time. Notified ny oceanic that we were declaring an emergency and exercising captain's emergency authority/authorized to deviate as needed. Kept ny oceanic appraised of our position as best we could. Reported back on course, no conflicts occurred.
