Narrative:

Approximately 30 mi northeast of eliom, we observed a line of thunderstorms 100 mi wide about 120 mi in front of us. We attempted to contact new york commercial radio on both VHF and HF frequencys but were unsuccessful. We tried houston, miami and merida ctrs but with no success. The captain initiated a deviation to the north of course and broadcast in the blind using captain's emergency authority/authorized. We deviated about 50 mi north of course and corrected back as soon as we were able. We finally contacted merida center about 30 mi north of alard fix and confirmed our deviation with merida center. They just acknowledged.
