Narrative:

I was on a VFR cross country with a student. I was acting as CFI. At 15 mi east of chadron airport, a loud 'bang' came from the engine. The engine had lost power and I instructed my student to head for the airport. I then called chadron unicom to advise of our situation. I then decided we were losing too much altitude and decided to land the aircraft in a field. I called chadron unicom and advised of our problem and that we were not going to make the airport. We landed the aircraft with no damage and no injuries. The engine had lost a rocker arm on the #2 cylinder. The maintenance personnel are looking over our other aircraft to see if there are other potential problems.
