Narrative:
Arrival to slc from south of ffu. Cleared to descend to 9000 ft. Captain was flying. Abeam ffu, cleared for visual approach to slc runway 34R. On intercept heading at 9000 ft, we got repeated 'terrain' warnings on our GPWS. As we could visually determine terrain clearance, we did not climb. Captain gave me aircraft control and I hand flew while he attempted to silence the terrain audio warning. During this time, I climbed the aircraft to approximately 9500 ft, partly due to distraction caused by the audible warning, and partly due to discomfort with the fact that we were getting the persistent terrain warning. The warning stopped, I descended back down to 9000 ft, gave the aircraft back to the captain, who completed a visual approach to runway 34R at slc. This problem has occurred on previous occasions for flts arriving slc from the southwest. Slc approach descends us to 9000 ft in vicinity of ffu to 20 mi ssw of ffu and we get the GPWS 'terrain' warning.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR FLC IS DISTR BY THE GPWS WARNING. THE FO ALLOWS THE ACFT TO CLB OUT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT OF 9000 FT. THE CREW HAD REALIZED THE GPWS ALERT WAS A FALSE WARNING.
Narrative: ARR TO SLC FROM S OF FFU. CLRED TO DSND TO 9000 FT. CAPT WAS FLYING. ABEAM FFU, CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH TO SLC RWY 34R. ON INTERCEPT HDG AT 9000 FT, WE GOT REPEATED 'TERRAIN' WARNINGS ON OUR GPWS. AS WE COULD VISUALLY DETERMINE TERRAIN CLRNC, WE DID NOT CLB. CAPT GAVE ME ACFT CTL AND I HAND FLEW WHILE HE ATTEMPTED TO SILENCE THE TERRAIN AUDIO WARNING. DURING THIS TIME, I CLBED THE ACFT TO APPROX 9500 FT, PARTLY DUE TO DISTR CAUSED BY THE AUDIBLE WARNING, AND PARTLY DUE TO DISCOMFORT WITH THE FACT THAT WE WERE GETTING THE PERSISTENT TERRAIN WARNING. THE WARNING STOPPED, I DSNDED BACK DOWN TO 9000 FT, GAVE THE ACFT BACK TO THE CAPT, WHO COMPLETED A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 34R AT SLC. THIS PROB HAS OCCURRED ON PREVIOUS OCCASIONS FOR FLTS ARRIVING SLC FROM THE SW. SLC APCH DSNDS US TO 9000 FT IN VICINITY OF FFU TO 20 MI SSW OF FFU AND WE GET THE GPWS 'TERRAIN' WARNING.
