Narrative:
Pushback was initiated at XA15Z from gate zy at sjc. During the pushback, the driver apologized for the slow push and I told her to take her time, there is no rush. Both engines were started and running at idle thrust. The pushback continued in a forward direction moving slowly. Everything seemed to be proceeding in a normal manner until the driver frantically said, 'where are you going?' I immediately stepped on the brakes because it didn't seem the aircraft was under the control of the tug. At no point during the pushback was aircraft control xferred to the flight crew nor was the aircraft moving under its own power. We were never told that the pushback was completed nor to set the brakes. Also, we never responded to any commands given from the tug driver. Supplemental information from acn 423647: the aircraft sustained damage when it contacted the tug.
