Narrative:
A log entry had been made the night before for contract maintenance to perform a system check of the in-flight passenger cell phone system. The check was completed and written off with an appropriate description of the action taken. The maintenance person entered their name and license number on the log page. All other appropriate boxes were completed. At the end of the first leg (ZZZ-YYY) the logbook was reviewed by one of our company mechanics. He noted that the non company (contract) mechanic had entered his name in the wrong box or on the wrong line in the maintenance log. He felt this then was an incomplete signoff. Maintenance supervisor disagreed noting that all the appropriate information was on the log page. When I reviewed the log prior to flight, I hadn't noticed that the name was on the wrong line. Apparently, I was satisfied that all the appropriate information was there, and didn't check carefully enough to insure it was in the correct location.

Title: AN MD80 HAD WORK ACCOMPLISHED BY A CONTRACT MECH WHO SIGNED OFF THE LOGBOOK ON THE CORRECT PAGE BUT THE WRONG LINE.
Narrative: A LOG ENTRY HAD BEEN MADE THE NIGHT BEFORE FOR CONTRACT MAINT TO PERFORM A SYS CHK OF THE INFLT PAX CELL PHONE SYS. THE CHK WAS COMPLETED AND WRITTEN OFF WITH AN APPROPRIATE DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTION TAKEN. THE MAINT PERSON ENTERED THEIR NAME AND LICENSE NUMBER ON THE LOG PAGE. ALL OTHER APPROPRIATE BOXES WERE COMPLETED. AT THE END OF THE FIRST LEG (ZZZ-YYY) THE LOGBOOK WAS REVIEWED BY ONE OF OUR COMPANY MECHS. HE NOTED THAT THE NON COMPANY (CONTRACT) MECH HAD ENTERED HIS NAME IN THE WRONG BOX OR ON THE WRONG LINE IN THE MAINT LOG. HE FELT THIS THEN WAS AN INCOMPLETE SIGNOFF. MAINT SUPVR DISAGREED NOTING THAT ALL THE APPROPRIATE INFO WAS ON THE LOG PAGE. WHEN I REVIEWED THE LOG PRIOR TO FLT, I HADN'T NOTICED THAT THE NAME WAS ON THE WRONG LINE. APPARENTLY, I WAS SATISFIED THAT ALL THE APPROPRIATE INFO WAS THERE, AND DIDN'T CHK CAREFULLY ENOUGH TO INSURE IT WAS IN THE CORRECT LOCATION.
