Narrative:
Original clearance logan 2. Taxi clearance reassigned flight to runway 27, wylyy 2 departure. On taxi out, FMC reprogrammed to runway 27 wylyy 2 FMS RNAV departure. First officer made takeoff in LNAV. After airborne, FMC and flight director commanded a right turn. First officer turned right following commands of flight director. When I saw him turning right, contrary to raw data displayed on my side, I stated 'something is wrong, turn back left.' as we were turning left toward wylyy waypoint, departure control asked for our heading. I reported 270 degrees as we passed 270 degrees in our turn toward wylyy. Departure control asked if we were turning toward wylyy and I stated we were. Departure control then put us on a radar vector until handing us off to center. I feel the erroneous information on the FMC and flight director was due to this aircraft not having 'toga activated runway position updating.' this aircraft does not receive radio updating until airborne. It may take several mins for this updating to take place.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG ACFT FLEW THE WRONG ROUTING ON DEP FROM BOS.
Narrative: ORIGINAL CLRNC LOGAN 2. TAXI CLRNC REASSIGNED FLT TO RWY 27, WYLYY 2 DEP. ON TAXI OUT, FMC REPROGRAMMED TO RWY 27 WYLYY 2 FMS RNAV DEP. FO MADE TKOF IN LNAV. AFTER AIRBORNE, FMC AND FLT DIRECTOR COMMANDED A R TURN. FO TURNED R FOLLOWING COMMANDS OF FLT DIRECTOR. WHEN I SAW HIM TURNING R, CONTRARY TO RAW DATA DISPLAYED ON MY SIDE, I STATED 'SOMETHING IS WRONG, TURN BACK L.' AS WE WERE TURNING L TOWARD WYLYY WAYPOINT, DEP CTL ASKED FOR OUR HDG. I RPTED 270 DEGS AS WE PASSED 270 DEGS IN OUR TURN TOWARD WYLYY. DEP CTL ASKED IF WE WERE TURNING TOWARD WYLYY AND I STATED WE WERE. DEP CTL THEN PUT US ON A RADAR VECTOR UNTIL HANDING US OFF TO CTR. I FEEL THE ERRONEOUS INFO ON THE FMC AND FLT DIRECTOR WAS DUE TO THIS ACFT NOT HAVING 'TOGA ACTIVATED RWY POS UPDATING.' THIS ACFT DOES NOT RECEIVE RADIO UPDATING UNTIL AIRBORNE. IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL MINS FOR THIS UPDATING TO TAKE PLACE.
