Narrative:

River visual runway 18 at dca. We were asked to remain at 3000 ft until 5 DME. Before the approach, I had entered the 3 DME, 900 ft visual descent point but was unable to enter the 4 DME, 1200 ft in the FMS due to distance too large. Coming closer to the runway, I attempted 1 more time to enter this visual descent point. When I looked up, we were flying on the eastern edge of the river as the captain was maneuvering for the final phase of the approach. The tower controller at this time advised us to 'turn right immediately to avoid P56,' which the captain did right away. We then continued the approach and landed without incident. From my seat it did not appear that the captain overflew 'the land' at any time while I was looking up, but was probably just at the edge of the river.

Title: CL65 NEARLY PENETRATES P56 ON RIVER VISUAL APCH TO DCA.

Narrative: RIVER VISUAL RWY 18 AT DCA. WE WERE ASKED TO REMAIN AT 3000 FT UNTIL 5 DME. BEFORE THE APCH, I HAD ENTERED THE 3 DME, 900 FT VISUAL DSCNT POINT BUT WAS UNABLE TO ENTER THE 4 DME, 1200 FT IN THE FMS DUE TO DISTANCE TOO LARGE. COMING CLOSER TO THE RWY, I ATTEMPTED 1 MORE TIME TO ENTER THIS VISUAL DSCNT POINT. WHEN I LOOKED UP, WE WERE FLYING ON THE EASTERN EDGE OF THE RIVER AS THE CAPT WAS MANEUVERING FOR THE FINAL PHASE OF THE APCH. THE TWR CTLR AT THIS TIME ADVISED US TO 'TURN R IMMEDIATELY TO AVOID P56,' WHICH THE CAPT DID RIGHT AWAY. WE THEN CONTINUED THE APCH AND LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. FROM MY SEAT IT DID NOT APPEAR THAT THE CAPT OVERFLEW 'THE LAND' AT ANY TIME WHILE I WAS LOOKING UP, BUT WAS PROBABLY JUST AT THE EDGE OF THE RIVER.
