Narrative:
Departed ege VFR to avoid additional delays as we were already in line waiting for takeoff for more than 30 mins. Picked up IFR clearance with ZDV 30 mi east of ege at 17500 ft. Upon rereading operations bulletin for ege, I don't think we followed the procedure correctly. It states to do 1200 ft and pick up IFR in the air with ZDV.

Narrative: DEPARTED EGE VFR TO AVOID ADDITIONAL DELAYS AS WE WERE ALREADY IN LINE WAITING FOR TKOF FOR MORE THAN 30 MINS. PICKED UP IFR CLRNC WITH ZDV 30 MI E OF EGE AT 17500 FT.
