Narrative:
After receiving ATIS for slc, I contacted approach and told them where I was. They gave me a squawk and told me to contact tower. I told them that I was unfamiliar with the area and was in severe turbulence. He told me to contact tower. I contacted tower told them that I was unfamiliar with airport. He told me to follow the freeway, then asked me if I saw the airport to the west. I told him that I did. He told me to land on the right runway. He had given me the runway number that I could not see. After telling him that I was turning for runway, I heard nothing until I landed, at which time he gave me a phone number and told me to call. So I called and gave him my n-number and name. He told me that I had landed on a closed runway and that he was going to fill out a report and asked me if I could read a compass. I told him I was in turbulence and he certainly saw me line up with that runway. Why did he not tell me at that time?
