Narrative:
We were cleared for takeoff on runway 15, just started takeoff roll and controller asked me say direction of flight (we were going back to home base -- hvn). My passenger had asked me a question and I was a bit distracted and I told the controller 'left turn, eastbound' as that was the display in my LORAN. Then I realized that I had not changed the LORAN to navigation back to the home airport -- hvn. (Wbound) the LORAN was still set to navigation to gon. I told the tower I wanted to amend my direction of flight to 'right turn, eastbound.' he questioned that and I apologized and told him 'right turn, wbound' which he approved. We proceeded on course and the tower approved a frequency change leaving the class D. Looking back, this 'cockpit confusion' could have been reduced or eliminated by limiting 'discussion' in the cabin until established in cruise and verifying settings in navigation equipment prior to starting the takeoff roll.

Title: A C177 PLT HAS A PROB IN ADVISING GON TWR WHICH DIRECTION HE WISHES TO DEPART VFR WHEN HE IS DISTRACTED ON THE TKOF ROLL.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 15, JUST STARTED TKOF ROLL AND CTLR ASKED ME SAY DIRECTION OF FLT (WE WERE GOING BACK TO HOME BASE -- HVN). MY PAX HAD ASKED ME A QUESTION AND I WAS A BIT DISTRACTED AND I TOLD THE CTLR 'L TURN, EBOUND' AS THAT WAS THE DISPLAY IN MY LORAN. THEN I REALIZED THAT I HAD NOT CHANGED THE LORAN TO NAV BACK TO THE HOME ARPT -- HVN. (WBOUND) THE LORAN WAS STILL SET TO NAV TO GON. I TOLD THE TWR I WANTED TO AMEND MY DIRECTION OF FLT TO 'R TURN, EBOUND.' HE QUESTIONED THAT AND I APOLOGIZED AND TOLD HIM 'R TURN, WBOUND' WHICH HE APPROVED. WE PROCEEDED ON COURSE AND THE TWR APPROVED A FREQ CHANGE LEAVING THE CLASS D. LOOKING BACK, THIS 'COCKPIT CONFUSION' COULD HAVE BEEN REDUCED OR ELIMINATED BY LIMITING 'DISCUSSION' IN THE CABIN UNTIL ESTABLISHED IN CRUISE AND VERIFYING SETTINGS IN NAV EQUIP PRIOR TO STARTING THE TKOF ROLL.
