Narrative:

I flew a C182D for 20 mins under the mistaken belief that my third class medical certificate was valid. Subsequently, I discovered that my third class medical certificate had expired. I attribute this mistake to my confusion as to the recently changed regulation regarding the duration of the third class medical certificate. Specifically, the change from 24 to 36 months for pilots under the age of 40 yrs.
