Narrative:
With ZKC at 3000 ft over broken clouds. Reported spotting field through opening. Center cleared me for approach, switched to tower. By then I had flown past opening, was cleared to land on runway 17. I descended and broke out near end of runway 35. Notified tower that I was proceeding to crosswind runway 17 and then left downwind runway 17. Tower asked me to phone them on the ground for a discussion. In retrospect, I should have requested an instrument approach.

Narrative: WITH ZKC AT 3000 FT OVER BROKEN CLOUDS. RPTED SPOTTING FIELD THROUGH OPENING. CTR CLRED ME FOR APCH, SWITCHED TO TWR. BY THEN I HAD FLOWN PAST OPENING, WAS CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 17. I DSNDED AND BROKE OUT NEAR END OF RWY 35. NOTIFIED TWR THAT I WAS PROCEEDING TO XWIND RWY 17 AND THEN L DOWNWIND RWY 17. TWR ASKED ME TO PHONE THEM ON THE GND FOR A DISCUSSION. IN RETROSPECT, I SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED AN INST APCH.
