Narrative:
On arrival at smd, IMC prevailed with light freezing rain. During setup for the approach I used the boots and alcohol (windshield) to keep the airplane free of ice. After joining the approach course and because of my preoccupation with the icing conditions I prematurely descended to MDA before the final approach fix. I realized at the FAF where I was and continued (VFR) to the airport and landing. It was my first trip in a deice airplane in icing conditions so my concern for the ice got me out of synch on the approach.
