Narrative:
I am a laid off pilot doing contract work. I had previously worked for an oil company for 12 yrs. I have flown cpr jets since 1978. Met at XA00 and did 3 takeoffs and lndgs to full stop as sole manipulator and a brief familiarization with the aircraft. I am not typed in the aircraft, and never had been in a BE40 prior. Took off with passenger at XA03. Climbing en route, I was reading high altitude chart and checking out the GPS unit which I had never operated before when ATC called and asked what was our assigned altitude. I told ATC the altitude, and noted to the captain we had missed the leveloff and needed to get back to the altitude assigned, which he did. The rest of the trip was uneventful. Human factors: I am not rated, familiar with aircraft or autoplt, not familiar with captain. I am barely current. On subsequent trips, as a contractor, I have made it a point to reach across the cockpit, point, and say 'altitude select is armed.' note: I also suggested captain call ATC (ZMP and ZAU) which he did.
