Narrative:

During climb out, while level at 14000 ft, ZDC called out traffic at 11 O'clock position 16000 ft coming toward us. We reported seeing the traffic. Then we were cleared to climb to 17000 ft. The traffic was told to maintain heading and we were told to maintain visual separation. We did not have TCASII, but felt that the separation was not good and turned away from the traffic. At the same time the traffic was also making an evasive turn from us. The center controller asked the traffic if they got a TCASII alert and they said yes. Our flight continued on to destination, no comments from center.
