Narrative:
We pulled up to the hold line of runway 18L and stopped. Tower called 'on to hold runway 18L,' but the call sign was blocked. We called back that the call sign was blocked, and repeated the clearance 'on to hold' for us (call sign). We waited for an answer, but tower made no reply, with no one else holding short (we thought) and an aircraft on final (5 NM out), I taxied on to hold. When tower gave the takeoff clearance, it was not for us. It had been meant for a cessna across the runway, holding. I did not see the cessna due to: the darkness and did not make a second confirming call to tower to ensure the runway clearance was for me. We cleared up with tower our mistake. Tower then gave us takeoff clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 MISTAKES CLRNC AND TAXIES ONTO ACTIVE RWY AT MCO.
Narrative: WE PULLED UP TO THE HOLD LINE OF RWY 18L AND STOPPED. TWR CALLED 'ON TO HOLD RWY 18L,' BUT THE CALL SIGN WAS BLOCKED. WE CALLED BACK THAT THE CALL SIGN WAS BLOCKED, AND REPEATED THE CLRNC 'ON TO HOLD' FOR US (CALL SIGN). WE WAITED FOR AN ANSWER, BUT TWR MADE NO REPLY, WITH NO ONE ELSE HOLDING SHORT (WE THOUGHT) AND AN ACFT ON FINAL (5 NM OUT), I TAXIED ON TO HOLD. WHEN TWR GAVE THE TKOF CLRNC, IT WAS NOT FOR US. IT HAD BEEN MEANT FOR A CESSNA ACROSS THE RWY, HOLDING. I DID NOT SEE THE CESSNA DUE TO: THE DARKNESS AND DID NOT MAKE A SECOND CONFIRMING CALL TO TWR TO ENSURE THE RWY CLRNC WAS FOR ME. WE CLRED UP WITH TWR OUR MISTAKE. TWR THEN GAVE US TKOF CLRNC.
