Narrative:
We were #1 for takeoff with checklist done. First officer said he might have heard a compressor stall, but we both agreed that it was the elevator in the tailwind. I heard the tower say position and hold and was sure it was for us. First officer read back position and hold with our flight number and it was not challenged by tower. As we went into position, the tower asked who was going onto the runway. They told us the position and hold was for another aircraft. We were then cleared for takeoff. In the future, I will make sure both of us hear any clearance before I accept it. My first officer was ready to question the tower, but I was sure I heard the correct number. The tower heard our call as well as the other aircraft but did not question who else was accepting a clearance.
