Narrative:
At approximately XA05 on aug/xa/99, departing runway 6 in ack on an IFR flight plan to martha's vineyard, the nose baggage door opened and broke or separated from the aircraft. I decided there was sufficient runway to pull the power to idle and stop the aircraft. After slowing to taxi speed I notified the tower of what happened and of debris on the runway. The 2 passenger or myself were uninjured and no other aircraft were affected by the aborted takeoff or debris on the runway. The aborted takeoff was due to my failure to ensure all doors and windows were closed and latched as per before starting engines checklist. Normally I use a flow check for start, taxi, and run-up. I was disciplined the next day with the chief pilot and will use a written checklist for all further flts.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA CHARTER CREW ABORTS TKOF AFTER NOSE BAGGAGE DOOR SEPARATES DURING TKOF.
Narrative: AT APPROX XA05 ON AUG/XA/99, DEPARTING RWY 6 IN ACK ON AN IFR FLT PLAN TO MARTHA'S VINEYARD, THE NOSE BAGGAGE DOOR OPENED AND BROKE OR SEPARATED FROM THE ACFT. I DECIDED THERE WAS SUFFICIENT RWY TO PULL THE PWR TO IDLE AND STOP THE ACFT. AFTER SLOWING TO TAXI SPD I NOTIFIED THE TWR OF WHAT HAPPENED AND OF DEBRIS ON THE RWY. THE 2 PAX OR MYSELF WERE UNINJURED AND NO OTHER ACFT WERE AFFECTED BY THE ABORTED TKOF OR DEBRIS ON THE RWY. THE ABORTED TKOF WAS DUE TO MY FAILURE TO ENSURE ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS WERE CLOSED AND LATCHED AS PER BEFORE STARTING ENGS CHKLIST. NORMALLY I USE A FLOW CHK FOR START, TAXI, AND RUN-UP. I WAS DISCIPLINED THE NEXT DAY WITH THE CHIEF PLT AND WILL USE A WRITTEN CHKLIST FOR ALL FURTHER FLTS.
