Narrative:

Abe departure told us to climb to 8000 ft. We went through the assigned altitude to 8600 ft. Departure told us to maintain 8000 ft and we descended back down to 8000 ft. The first officer was flying and I was performing after takeoff checklist. Contributing factors were the first officer's lack of experience in the aircraft (less than 70 hours), turbulence as we entered the broken layer of clouds and workload at the time of the leveloff. There was no traffic conflict.
