Narrative:
I was being vectored by teb tower for landing on runway 1. I approached from wnw and was vectored overhead at 1000 ft to enter a right downwind for runway 1. Controller was nervous, confused, overwhelmed by volume. Told me he would issue me traffic while on downwind. Said to continue and he would call my right base. He asked me if I had a learjet in sight. I responded 'negative.' he gave me left turn at which time the lear captain reported a near midair. I never had the lear in sight and wasn't issued a position report. I was in the pattern for 10 mins being vectored. This controller should not be assigned teb.
