Narrative:

On feb/sat/00, I was assigned a work release item for a boeing B757 aircraft. The work item had a maintenance tech service job card requesting that a digital flight data acquisition unit (dfdau) be replaced for troubleshooting purposes. The job card then requested the ACARS be deferred until engine condition monitoring could be verified from engineering. The job card stated that the class control number for the dfdau was wxxxx at our line stock room, the nightly rotable part printout showed a wxxxx was received for this aircraft. I installed the dfdau per maintenance manual. Later I completed the parts tag and used the same class control number from the serviceable part number from the unserviceable number. When I entered the dfdau replacement in the computer, it quizzed me to make sure the part and serial numbers were correct. I selected 'accept current values.' then I contacted maintenance control and told them that the job card for the dfdau replacement was accomplished. Then, per maintenance control, I deferred the ACARS for flight evaluation. The next night ACARS data still was not being received. Maintenance swapped dfdau from a known good system. That's when it was discovered I installed a B767 dfdau onto a B757 aircraft. The dfdau's alignment pins are the same for both aircraft so either dfdau can be installed on either aircraft. Also the bite test for the installed dfdau checked good.

Title: A B757-200 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH THE INCORRECT DIGITAL FLT DATA ACQUISITION UNIT INSTALLED.

Narrative: ON FEB/SAT/00, I WAS ASSIGNED A WORK RELEASE ITEM FOR A BOEING B757 ACFT. THE WORK ITEM HAD A MAINT TECH SVC JOB CARD REQUESTING THAT A DIGITAL FLT DATA ACQUISITION UNIT (DFDAU) BE REPLACED FOR TROUBLESHOOTING PURPOSES. THE JOB CARD THEN REQUESTED THE ACARS BE DEFERRED UNTIL ENG CONDITION MONITORING COULD BE VERIFIED FROM ENGINEERING. THE JOB CARD STATED THAT THE CLASS CTL NUMBER FOR THE DFDAU WAS WXXXX AT OUR LINE STOCK ROOM, THE NIGHTLY ROTABLE PART PRINTOUT SHOWED A WXXXX WAS RECEIVED FOR THIS ACFT. I INSTALLED THE DFDAU PER MAINT MANUAL. LATER I COMPLETED THE PARTS TAG AND USED THE SAME CLASS CTL NUMBER FROM THE SERVICEABLE PART NUMBER FROM THE UNSERVICEABLE NUMBER. WHEN I ENTERED THE DFDAU REPLACEMENT IN THE COMPUTER, IT QUIZZED ME TO MAKE SURE THE PART AND SERIAL NUMBERS WERE CORRECT. I SELECTED 'ACCEPT CURRENT VALUES.' THEN I CONTACTED MAINT CTL AND TOLD THEM THAT THE JOB CARD FOR THE DFDAU REPLACEMENT WAS ACCOMPLISHED. THEN, PER MAINT CTL, I DEFERRED THE ACARS FOR FLT EVALUATION. THE NEXT NIGHT ACARS DATA STILL WAS NOT BEING RECEIVED. MAINT SWAPPED DFDAU FROM A KNOWN GOOD SYS. THAT'S WHEN IT WAS DISCOVERED I INSTALLED A B767 DFDAU ONTO A B757 ACFT. THE DFDAU'S ALIGNMENT PINS ARE THE SAME FOR BOTH ACFT SO EITHER DFDAU CAN BE INSTALLED ON EITHER ACFT. ALSO THE BITE TEST FOR THE INSTALLED DFDAU CHKED GOOD.
