Narrative:
Holding in position for takeoff on runway 32R. Aircraft Y holding in position for takeoff on runway 32L. Tower says aircraft X turn right 020 degrees, cleared for takeoff runway 32R. First officer reads back clearance. At approximately 40 KIAS, tower asks aircraft X 'are you holding in position.' first officer said, 'negative, we are rolling.' tower says, 'hold your position.' captain aborts takeoff at approximately 60 KIAS. After complying with brake cooling chart requirement we are reclred for takeoff approximately 10 mins later. After airborne, contacted aircraft Y on a discrete frequency and learned they had also aborted their takeoff on runway 32L during the confusion. Fact -- either aircraft X or aircraft Y accepted a clearance intended for the other aircraft. Suspect -- first officer clearance readbacks were blocked by each other or at least blocked to aircraft X. Interesting setup especially with the blocked readbacks. Tower said nothing out of the ordinary to us after the abort. Personally curios as to who was really cleared for takeoff.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: 2 ACR'S WITH SIMILAR CALL SIGNS ACCEPT TKOF CLRNC AT ORD ON PARALLEL RWYS. TWR QUESTIONS WHO IS HOLDING ON RWY AND BOTH ACFT REJECT TKOF.
Narrative: HOLDING IN POS FOR TKOF ON RWY 32R. ACFT Y HOLDING IN POS FOR TKOF ON RWY 32L. TWR SAYS ACFT X TURN R 020 DEGS, CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 32R. FO READS BACK CLRNC. AT APPROX 40 KIAS, TWR ASKS ACFT X 'ARE YOU HOLDING IN POS.' FO SAID, 'NEGATIVE, WE ARE ROLLING.' TWR SAYS, 'HOLD YOUR POS.' CAPT ABORTS TKOF AT APPROX 60 KIAS. AFTER COMPLYING WITH BRAKE COOLING CHART REQUIREMENT WE ARE RECLRED FOR TKOF APPROX 10 MINS LATER. AFTER AIRBORNE, CONTACTED ACFT Y ON A DISCRETE FREQ AND LEARNED THEY HAD ALSO ABORTED THEIR TKOF ON RWY 32L DURING THE CONFUSION. FACT -- EITHER ACFT X OR ACFT Y ACCEPTED A CLRNC INTENDED FOR THE OTHER ACFT. SUSPECT -- FO CLRNC READBACKS WERE BLOCKED BY EACH OTHER OR AT LEAST BLOCKED TO ACFT X. INTERESTING SETUP ESPECIALLY WITH THE BLOCKED READBACKS. TWR SAID NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY TO US AFTER THE ABORT. PERSONALLY CURIOS AS TO WHO WAS REALLY CLRED FOR TKOF.
