Narrative:
Location: 5 mi east of dfw airport, approach flight was coming off cedar creek arrival assigned dfw runway 17C. Heading was 350 degrees on left downwind level 7000 ft. As captain I instructed the copilot to slow to 190 KIAS. Approach control asked our speed, told us that the STAR speed assignment was 210 KIAS and if we wanted to go slower we had to ask him for permission to reduce speed. After 2 turns to final the approach controller assigned a clearance to further slow and hold 180 KIAS to the runway 17C OM 'jiffy.'
