Narrative:
Left btf and flew to our normal practice area (west of ogd). I contacted slc approach shortly after takeoff and told them I intended to go to the practice area then to ogd. I was given a squawk code and TA's. After reaching the practice area, I told approach of my desire to go to ogd. They gave me the current WX and altimeter setting and radar service was terminated. (The purpose of my flight to ogd was to do 3 night lndgs to remain current for night flight.) after 3 attempts to reach ogd tower, I circled and contacted slc approach again to ask if they knew if the tower at ogd was open. They informed me it was closed and to use the same frequency for CTAF. They also informed me and at least 2 other aft in the area. I proceeded to land at ogd, saw the tower light, found the runway, and did a touch-and-go. As I was leaving the runway, I noticed the tower was on the wrong side and some F16's parked. Needless to say, I was surprised to find I did my touch-and-go at hill AFB. 2 mi to the north of ogd, I contacted hill tower and talked to military controller. After landing at btf, I called him on the phone and apologized for the error. I informed him that the tower light had a very fast double white and I only saw 1 flash. Afterwards, hill security called for my personal information. She also told me, after my apology, that this happens regularly. I told them it would not happen again!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C182 PVT PLTS LANDS WITHOUT AUTH AT HILL AFB DURING A NIGHT OP INSTEAD OF OGD, UT.
Narrative: LEFT BTF AND FLEW TO OUR NORMAL PRACTICE AREA (W OF OGD). I CONTACTED SLC APCH SHORTLY AFTER TKOF AND TOLD THEM I INTENDED TO GO TO THE PRACTICE AREA THEN TO OGD. I WAS GIVEN A SQUAWK CODE AND TA'S. AFTER REACHING THE PRACTICE AREA, I TOLD APCH OF MY DESIRE TO GO TO OGD. THEY GAVE ME THE CURRENT WX AND ALTIMETER SETTING AND RADAR SVC WAS TERMINATED. (THE PURPOSE OF MY FLT TO OGD WAS TO DO 3 NIGHT LNDGS TO REMAIN CURRENT FOR NIGHT FLT.) AFTER 3 ATTEMPTS TO REACH OGD TWR, I CIRCLED AND CONTACTED SLC APCH AGAIN TO ASK IF THEY KNEW IF THE TWR AT OGD WAS OPEN. THEY INFORMED ME IT WAS CLOSED AND TO USE THE SAME FREQ FOR CTAF. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME AND AT LEAST 2 OTHER AFT IN THE AREA. I PROCEEDED TO LAND AT OGD, SAW THE TWR LIGHT, FOUND THE RWY, AND DID A TOUCH-AND-GO. AS I WAS LEAVING THE RWY, I NOTICED THE TWR WAS ON THE WRONG SIDE AND SOME F16'S PARKED. NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND I DID MY TOUCH-AND-GO AT HILL AFB. 2 MI TO THE N OF OGD, I CONTACTED HILL TWR AND TALKED TO MIL CTLR. AFTER LNDG AT BTF, I CALLED HIM ON THE PHONE AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE ERROR. I INFORMED HIM THAT THE TWR LIGHT HAD A VERY FAST DOUBLE WHITE AND I ONLY SAW 1 FLASH. AFTERWARDS, HILL SECURITY CALLED FOR MY PERSONAL INFO. SHE ALSO TOLD ME, AFTER MY APOLOGY, THAT THIS HAPPENS REGULARLY. I TOLD THEM IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN!
