Narrative:
While executing the bridge arrival into tpa in VMC, a 360 degree heading was erroneously taken at brdge intersection rather than at the correct following intersection (jttrm). ATC queried our early turn, which was immediate corrected. Contributing factors were: 1) difficulty obtaining aural identify of navaids by PNF (captain) leading to my failure to adequately monitor the first officer (PF) navigation, and 2) distraction of PF and PNF determining whether an airshow at mac dill was still active after we were vectored toward it. Future efforts will resume an old habit of verbalizing each action point in a SID or STAR in sequence prior to arrival at each such point. ATC reassured us that there was no problem and no other traffic. Supplemental information from acn 468329: no aural identify and intermittently split needles.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727-200 FLC PERFORMS AN EARLY TURN ON THE STAR WHICH IS CAUGHT BY THE APCH CTLR AT TPA, FL.
Narrative: WHILE EXECUTING THE BRIDGE ARR INTO TPA IN VMC, A 360 DEG HDG WAS ERRONEOUSLY TAKEN AT BRDGE INTXN RATHER THAN AT THE CORRECT FOLLOWING INTXN (JTTRM). ATC QUERIED OUR EARLY TURN, WHICH WAS IMMEDIATE CORRECTED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE: 1) DIFFICULTY OBTAINING AURAL IDENT OF NAVAIDS BY PNF (CAPT) LEADING TO MY FAILURE TO ADEQUATELY MONITOR THE FO (PF) NAV, AND 2) DISTR OF PF AND PNF DETERMINING WHETHER AN AIRSHOW AT MAC DILL WAS STILL ACTIVE AFTER WE WERE VECTORED TOWARD IT. FUTURE EFFORTS WILL RESUME AN OLD HABIT OF VERBALIZING EACH ACTION POINT IN A SID OR STAR IN SEQUENCE PRIOR TO ARR AT EACH SUCH POINT. ATC REASSURED US THAT THERE WAS NO PROB AND NO OTHER TFC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 468329: NO AURAL IDENT AND INTERMITTENTLY SPLIT NEEDLES.
