Narrative:
Given a rerte approaching nepta for WX in dfw. I am a new first officer and captain was showing me different ways to input the change. We had selected the first 2 new waypoints for the plane to navigation to so we would have time to program the changes. After finishing the data input we checked the distance and course and felt good about the data. We selected the new data and continued. ATC advised we were north of course, J86. Not sure why we were north and no NAVAID to verify from, but given a vector. Single unit GPS, so not able to xchk either. ATC did not advise how far off course we were.
