Narrative:
While taxiing out to runway 4L/22R on taxiway a, we were told to hold short of intersection H. Then we received clearance to continue taxiing on taxiway a. My head was down looking for directions on my map when my captain taxied straight ahead on taxiway a and instead of making the turn on taxiway a he went on taxiway ka, crossed runway 13R/31L, which was not an active runway, and continued on taxiway K. Upon realizing our mistake, we stopped, questioned ATC and were told to exit at taxiway kb, taxi down runway 4L, and exit at taxiway J to join taxiway a, which we did. The situation arose because we both were unfamiliar with the airport and we started taxiing before we knew our position on the field. Also, I should have been 'heads up' at all times, and not accepted taxi instructions until I knew our position.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80 CREW HAD RWY INCURSION.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING OUT TO RWY 4L/22R ON TXWY A, WE WERE TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF INTXN H. THEN WE RECEIVED CLRNC TO CONTINUE TAXIING ON TXWY A. MY HEAD WAS DOWN LOOKING FOR DIRECTIONS ON MY MAP WHEN MY CAPT TAXIED STRAIGHT AHEAD ON TXWY A AND INSTEAD OF MAKING THE TURN ON TXWY A HE WENT ON TXWY KA, CROSSED RWY 13R/31L, WHICH WAS NOT AN ACTIVE RWY, AND CONTINUED ON TXWY K. UPON REALIZING OUR MISTAKE, WE STOPPED, QUESTIONED ATC AND WERE TOLD TO EXIT AT TXWY KB, TAXI DOWN RWY 4L, AND EXIT AT TXWY J TO JOIN TXWY A, WHICH WE DID. THE SIT AROSE BECAUSE WE BOTH WERE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT AND WE STARTED TAXIING BEFORE WE KNEW OUR POS ON THE FIELD. ALSO, I SHOULD HAVE BEEN 'HEADS UP' AT ALL TIMES, AND NOT ACCEPTED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS UNTIL I KNEW OUR POS.
