Narrative:
Taxiing south from terminal in taxiway east, nearly ran past runway hold line for runway 5 with aircraft landing on runway 5. Due to darkness and wet pavement almost missed runway hold line. There needs to be installed side flashing lights or in-ground amber hold lights. First officer I was with said on previous trip with another captain on same taxiway (east) going north on other side of runway 5, the captain had to slam on brakes at last min again due to difficulty in seeing hold lines. This is a dangerous situation and an accident is likely to happen here. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter says surface was wet, causing the aircraft lights to not light up the markings. He also noted that the taxiway widens at this point, making the use of surface or imbedded lighting probably the only solution. There was no runway incursion, but a hard stop was made.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR PLT COMPLAINS OF POOR MARKING OF THE HOLD SHORT LINES ON TXWY E FOR RWY 05 AT CLT.
Narrative: TAXIING S FROM TERMINAL IN TXWY E, NEARLY RAN PAST RWY HOLD LINE FOR RWY 5 WITH ACFT LNDG ON RWY 5. DUE TO DARKNESS AND WET PAVEMENT ALMOST MISSED RWY HOLD LINE. THERE NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED SIDE FLASHING LIGHTS OR IN-GROUND AMBER HOLD LIGHTS. FO I WAS WITH SAID ON PREVIOUS TRIP WITH ANOTHER CAPT ON SAME TXWY (E) GOING N ON OTHER SIDE OF RWY 5, THE CAPT HAD TO SLAM ON BRAKES AT LAST MIN AGAIN DUE TO DIFFICULTY IN SEEING HOLD LINES. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SIT AND AN ACCIDENT IS LIKELY TO HAPPEN HERE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR SAYS SURFACE WAS WET, CAUSING THE ACFT LIGHTS TO NOT LIGHT UP THE MARKINGS. HE ALSO NOTED THAT THE TXWY WIDENS AT THIS POINT, MAKING THE USE OF SURFACE OR IMBEDDED LIGHTING PROBABLY THE ONLY SOLUTION. THERE WAS NO RWY INCURSION, BUT A HARD STOP WAS MADE.
